How Does CBD Work?

Updated: Feb 8, 2022

Sure, you have heard of the Immune System, Muscular System and the Skeletal System. But did you know you also have an Endocannabinoid System?

Discovery

Research of individual plant based (phytocannabinoids) cannabinoids began in the 1940s. But it wasn't until the mid 80s that research provided solid evidence for the existence of cannabinoid receptors, which are found in all mammals. In 1990 the cannabinoid 1 (CB1) receptor was first isolated in both rats and humans. In 1993 a second cannabinoid receptor was isolated - CB2.

Receptors

CB1 is the most abundant receptor in the central nervous system. CB2 receptors occur mainly on immune cells but also have been detected in the central nervous system, where they are associated with inflammation, addiction and synaptic plasticity (ability to increase or decrease their activity).

Endocannabinoids

What is an Endocannabinoid? They are compounds made by YOUR body with the purpose of regulating. In 1992 researchers isolated the first endocannabinoid - anandamide often referred to as the bliss molecule. Cells create endocannainoids on demand whenever our bodies need to stay balanced during stress. By binding to CB1 receptors, anandamide protects neurons and facilitates the creation of new brain cells in adult mammals. Studies have shown physical exercise boosts anandamide levels resulting in the "runner high" .

Phytocannabinoids

Phyatocannabinoids are cannabinoids made by plants, most abundantly found in hemp. Because they are so close in structure to the cannabinoids made by your body they are able to communicate with and activate your Endocannabinoid System or ECS. The hemp plant produces over 100 known cannabinoids.

So How Does CBD Work?

When applied or consumed a CBD product activates the users Endocannabinoid System. Because the ECS is integrated with the nervous system there can be many functions affected.

Like any other system the ECS can become deficient. This is where using a product like Dreaming Field Farm CBD Oil or our CBD topical products (made by Dreaming Field Farm) can help activate your body to produce more of its own cannabinoids. CBD doesn't directly attach to the bodies receptors, but instead it activates the ECS to produce and release more endocannabinoids (made by the body). For example, if you have inflammation or pain in your knee and you consume Dreaming Field Farm CBD oil or apply our Topical CBD your body will recognize the CBD and produce and release its own cannabinoids to decrease the pain and inflammation. In other words CBD products help your body fix itself.
