What is CBDa?

There has been some buzz lately about CBDa, but what is it? According to a study published the week of January 10, 2022, researchers affiliated with Oregon State University stated “Cannabinoids Block Cellular Entry of SARS-CoV-2 and the Emerging Variants,”
The researchers found that two cannabinoid acids commonly found in hemp, CBGa (Cannabigerolic acid) and CBDa (Cannabidiolic acid), can bind to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. By binding to the spike protein, the compounds can prevent the virus from entering cells and causing infection, potentially offering new avenues to prevent and treat the disease.
So what exactly is CBDa? The hemp plant produces over 100 cannabinoids. Most are familiar with CBD, CBG & THC. As these cannabinoids are being produced by the hemp plant they are naturally occurring in an acidic form. CBDa is the raw form of CBD. When we as producers are making CBD or CBG oil we heat it up to remove the acidic molecule from the raw form. This process is known as decarboxylation. Essentially, decarboxylation of CBD is required for each of us to receive the most beneficial aspects of CBD or CBG. But there are some fantastic benefits with non-decarboxylated CBD (CBDa) as well.
Benefits of CBDa & CBGa
When CBD or CBG is left in its raw form (CBDa or CBGa) there is some evidence that suggests the beneficial effects may include reducing swelling and discomfort, lowering stress responses, fighting bacteria, and preventing nausea and vomiting. Most recently researchers affiliated with Oregon State University have published a study identifying CBDa & CBGa as having the potential to prevent coronavirus. In the study, the cannabis compounds bound to spike proteins found on the virus and blocked a step the pathogen uses to infect people. The research also showed the hemp compounds were equally effective against variants of SARS-CoV-2, including variant B.1.1.7, which was first detected in the United Kingdom, and variant B.1.351, first detected in South Africa.”
