Anxiety, Sleep and CBD

Getting a quality nights #sleep is important to ones overall health and wellbeing. Experts recommend adults should sleep 7 or more hours per night. Getting less than 7 hours on a regular basis could lead to serious health problems. Some of the most serious potential problems associated with chronic sleep deprivation are high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure or stroke. Other potential problems include obesity, depression, impairment in immunity and lower sex drive.

#ChronicSleepDeprivation can even affect your appearance. Over time, it can lead to premature wrinkling and dark circles under the eyes. There’s also a link between lack of sleep and an increase in the stress hormone, cortisol, in the body. Cortisol can break down collagen, the protein that keeps skin smooth.(1)

What Does CBD Research Say?

An increasing popular strategy for improving sleep is taking cannabidiol (#CBD). Often times we can't sleep well because of anxiety. How many times have you woken up in the middle of the night and thoughts start racing through your head? Did I remember to send that email? Did I give them the message? What if I can't insert concern here?

In a 2019 study (2), nearly all patients were given 25mg of CBD per day. 79.2% (57/72) and 66.7% (48/72) of all patients experienced an improvement in anxiety and sleep during the first month, respectively; Two months after the start of CBD use, 78.1% (32/41) and 56.1% (23/41) of patients reported improvement in anxiety and sleep respectively.

How Does CBD Help Anxiety?

According to a 2015 review, CBD interacts with the cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1R), the serotonin 5-HT1A receptor, and other receptors in the brain that regulate fear and anxiety-induced behaviors.

CBD doesn’t necessarily boost serotonin levels, but it may affect how your brain’s chemical receptors respond to the serotonin that’s already produced by your body. As mentioned in our How Does CBD Work? blog, the endocannabinoid system is a regulatory system that maintains balance in the body. If the body cannot keep up with demands we become deficient which results in symptoms. CBD helps to regulate the deficiencies and maintain homeostasis. In relation to anxiety, CBD helps our bodies response and efficiency to the existing serotonin therefore alleviating symptoms of anxiety.
